Beermen out to avenge, Gin Kings eye sweep

In their first round clash, Barangay Ginebra defeated San Miguel, 108-102, last August 27 behind the 51-point effort of Justin Brownlee. The Gin Kings certainly want a repeat, while the Beermen will be out to even things up against the sister teams battling for positioning entering the quarterfinals.

Marcio goes for history

San Miguel’s sniper Marcio Lassiter will look to make history in the game as he is only two threes from tying Jimmy Alapag for most threes in league history with 1,250. From the pace that he is going, Lassiter certainly is capable of doing so on Sunday as he had five against Phoenix in their last game.

Three-point shooting

Speaking of threes, the outside shooting will be one of the keys for Sunday’s game. Barangay Ginebra made 17 threes against Rain or Shine, with Justin Brownlee and Stephen Holt combining for 11. The Gin Kings also made eight in their first round encounter compared to six for San Miguel. With Lassiter showing the way, the Beermen averaged 11 over the past two games.

Barangay Ginebra guns for a quarterfinal seat when it faces powerhouse San Miguel Beer in the main game of the PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings will also be staking their four-game winning streak against the Beermen in their 7:30 p.m. encounter.

In the opening game at 5 p.m., Blackwater (3-4) resumes its playoff hunt when it faces winless Phoenix (0-7).

Tim Cone expects rough sailing against SMB, the same team Ginebra defeated, 108-102 during their first round encounter.

The Ginebra mentor knows San Miguel is a dangerous squad, especially with American reinforcement Jordan Adams back in action after being placed in the injured/reserve list in lieu of Sheldon Mac.

Mac, the former Washington Wizard, lasted just one game, scoring 16 points, a rebound and an assist in the Beermen's 119-115 win over NLEX several days back.

Adams, then returned to action on Friday, firing 49 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in San Miguel's 139-127 demolition of Phoenix.

That game saw Justin Brownlee erupt for a career-best 51, outplaying Adams, who was held down to just 23 in the battle of sister teams.
